Riders welcome MATA’s free fares, but delays keep many off the bus

The Memphis Area Transit Authority will suspend fares for 90 days starting Nov. 16 as part of a pilot program to boost ridership. While the change could benefit University of Memphis students and employees who rely on bus routes near campus, many say unreliable schedules and limited service, not cost, remain the biggest barriers to using public transit.

TPUSA tabling prompts protest on campus day before Riley Gaines event

A Turning Point USA tabling event at the University of Memphis drew about 15 student protesters Tuesday afternoon. The demonstrators criticized the conservative group’s messaging about transgender athletes, saying it targets and misrepresents trans students. The protest took place ahead of Riley Gaines’ scheduled speaking appearance on campus Wednesday.

UofM, City of Memphis plan new crosswalk after safety concerns

The University of Memphis and the City of Memphis plan to install an enhanced crosswalk with flashing yellow lights at Patterson and Midland avenues to improve pedestrian safety. While the project is moving forward after state grant approval, several urban planning students say the design doesn’t go far enough to slow traffic or protect walkers, calling for raised crosswalks and speed-reduction measures instead.

Many attendees were University of Memphis students and members of campus organizations like Tigers Against Pollution and United Campus Workers, who voiced concerns about over-policing, immigration enforcement, and federal occupation in the city. The protest featured speeches from congressional candidate Justin Pearson and gubernatorial candidate Jerri Green, along with chants, music, and community solidarity.

The Show Must Go On: Stonewall Tigers host drag show after several setbacks

The Stonewall Tigers hosted their annual drag show Friday in the University Center Ballroom, overcoming organizational and financial setbacks after the University of Memphis cut the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Hosted by Tyler Crisp, whose stage name is Bryce the Crispiest, the event featured both professional and student performers, marking the first time students took the stage.

The University of Memphis hosted its annual Tiger Blue Goes Green fair on Oct. 7 at the Student Plaza, highlighting sustainability efforts across campus and the Memphis community. With over 30 local organizations and businesses in attendance, the event encouraged students to explore recycling, composting and eco-friendly transportation while connecting them with internship and volunteer opportunities.

University of Memphis students have several free or affordable options to get to Tiger football games without worrying about parking. The Blue Line shuttle offers direct service from campus, while students can also bike with free stadium parking, use rideshare apps, or take the MATA bus for just $2, though service is limited.
