The University of Memphis hosted its annual Tiger Blue Goes Green fair on Oct. 7 at the Student Plaza, highlighting sustainability efforts across campus and the Memphis community. With over 30 local organizations and businesses in attendance, the event encouraged students to explore recycling, composting and eco-friendly transportation while connecting them with internship and volunteer opportunities.
The event placed participants in the roles of individuals recently released from prison, requiring them to navigate challenges such as securing identification, finding employment, and meeting probation requirements. Led by Patrick Backus, reentry affairs coordinator for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the simulation aimed to build empathy and awareness of the barriers faced by justice-involved individuals.
Bill Weppner, who worked on Apollo missions 7 through 13, shared reflections on his favorite mission and the importance of inspiring future generations. Students, faculty and community members attended the event, which also served as an early kickoff to World Space Week.
