The Daily Helmsman

From the Editor's Desk: The leap from photo to news

At the beginning of the fall semester when I was named the Daily Helmsman's first ever photo editor, I was both excited and nervous. Not only was I going to be in a position that was completely new to me, but it was also new to the editorial staff as well.

After taking time out to research all the requirements and standards of the job, getting to become good friends with the fellow editors, commit to an organization I was really passionate about, and finally having the college experience I have been looking for since coming to the University of Memphis in January, I knew I found a place to call home. Being in the Daily Helmsman gave me a purpose and a reason to show up and show out.

I've gotten to work with fellow photographers as we all found what worked for us best. Whether this was going to news events, sporting games, or collaborating with writers to take photos for their pieces, I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed being a big part of the staff this semester.

Though I won't be returning in the spring as the photo editor, I will be returning as the news editor. The new position has left me feeling the same emotions I felt when I first stepped into the Daily Helmsman headquarters: excited and nervous. However, I have the strength and support of the ever-growing staff by my side to be there for me.

Before I end my letter, I want to give a personal thank-you to my friends and co-workers, Sam McCormick, Jaylon Hawkins, and Joel Haley, for showing me the ropes, never giving up on me, and for always supporting my ideas throughout the semester. Another thank-you is reserved for my assistant photo editors, Heidi Wills and Hoanglam Vo, for remaining loyal and staying dedicated to the job.

To the staff, all photographers and writers, without you all the Daily Helmsman would not be what it is now. We deeply appreciate you all for sticking by and working hard. To Dr. Thomas Hrach, I extend my appreciation to you as well for seeing something within me and continuing to believe in this organization as much as I do.

Of course, I can't end my shoutouts without one to my family for being my rock throughout my entire college journey. To my grandmother especially: thank you for reading all my articles, checking the website weekly for my work, and for helping me make it through school. Without you, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Lastly, to all the readers, UofM students, faculty, staff, alumni, or any other supporter, I speak on behalf of all of us at the Daily Helmsman that we are thankful for your time and encouragement as we make this transition from fall to spring and introduce new editors as well. Continue reading the Daily Helmsman for more stories as always.

We hope to see you all in the new year!
