The University of Memphis’ Department of Journalism and Strategic Media has added a hygiene locker inside the Edward J. Meeman Journalism Building to provide students with free personal care items.
The locker, named Meeman Essentials, is stocked with full-size and travel-size personal care items for any student who needs them. It is aimed to support students who may be facing financial difficulty or have forgotten to bring certain items with them to campus.
Faculty and staff in the department said the initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce stressors outside of the classroom to allow students to fully focus on academic success.
The locker is located in the equipment room, Room 331, and is open during normal equipment room hours. Students who feel uncomfortable accessing items when the space is busy can ask the desk assistant for the ‘Essentials Kit’ to create a no-judgement environment.
