With Chicago being University of Memphis’ last theatrical show of the semester, many people are eagerly wondering what’s next.

The theatre program kicked off the fall semester with "As It Is in Heaven", which explored the Shaker community in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky.

The following production, "Home", was a faculty and guest artist dance concert which was choreographed by University of Memphis’ faculty members in the dance and dance science departments.

Guest artist Cornelius Carter was featured throughout this production as he is known as an honorable dancer and choreographer who works all over the world. The concert was meant to capture the emotional, physical, and cultural aspects of what many call home through diverse perspectives.

Lastly "Chicago" was an energetic musical that explored the journey of two murderesses, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart. Ticket sales were a success which left the theatre department with hope for the spring semester.

Next semester, the Department of Theatre and Dance are launching "As You Like It", a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's As You Like It. Their production will be a product of Shaina Taub, a well-known lyricist and composer. Students of the department will choreograph the play as they have recently been prompted to send pitches.

“That will be an interesting one because it’s on stage." said Emily Draffen, the Communications Specialist of Department of Theatre and Dance. "There’s going to be no house seats. We’re going to sell a maximum of 125 tickets and all seating is going to be 'bring your lawn chair' because this is Shakespeare in the park.”

The stage will resemble a park to make the audience feel connected to the play and to create a true Shakespeare in the park ambiance. "As You Like It" will be showcased February of 2026.

The Department of Theatre and Dance welcomes all majors to audition for each upcoming show.

Draffen also states that, “If you are a student, faculty, or staff, you are entitled to one free ticket per show.” Draffen hopes that many take advantage of this opportunity as she looks forward to the multifarious future shows.
