Come mid-January David Zettergren, the vice president for business and finance at the University of Memphis, will retire, according to a campus- wide email from the office of the president.

During his 30 years of work with the U of M, Zettergren was also the manager of financial reporting, director of accounting, and the assistant vice president for finance.

Zettergren’s own Physical Science undergrad degree and master’s degree in accountancy were earned here at the U of M. Zettergren was named CFO of the year in 2013 and received the lifetime achievement award in 2014 by The Memphis Business Journal.

Most recently Zettergren emailed The Daily Helmsman in reference to the possible relocation of the TIGUrS garden, which the student government has now recommended not happen as the old Richardson Towers space will be the main focus of parking expansion.

“I am an avid gardener myself, and I know most of us on campus are huge fans,†Zettergren said in the email. “I can assure you we will make sure the garden is successful, no matter where it is located. It is now very much a part of our campus!â€

In 2011 The Daily Helmsman reported that during a town hall meeting Zettergren answered a question regarding a lack of healthy choices in vending machines that also addressed an increase in vending machine food prices. He said that he was open to “entertain other options that (students) think are available.â€

In another town hall meeting in 2012, Zettergren addressed Campus Police Services’ role in enforcing non-smoking rules.

“We have a limited number of security officers on campus and I don’t know if I want their primary focus to be looking out for people who are smoking,†Zettergren said.
