The Student Activities Council plans to hold a “Glow Light Party†Thursday night in the Grey Room of the Recreational Center as part of “Viva Las Memphis,†the group’s opening week, Aug. 19 through 26.

SAC has multiple events scheduled over the first week of school for their Las Vegas themed involvement week.

“We wanted to do something new and innovative,†said Bryson Porter, a SAC member who helped organize the events. “This all goes with our theme, ‘Viva Las Memphis.’ Casino theme has never been done.â€

The “Glow Light Party†will be a black light painting-oriented event by Paint U with a DJ and drinks.

“We were inspired by the color-run events on campus and decided to create a fun event,†19-year-old business management major and SAC member Bryson Porter said.

The organization expects nearly 500 students to take part in the “Glow Light†event. SAC is advertising the event to students via social media, University Center televisions and small flyers.

They have been planning for the opening week from May until early August. The committee members came up with the events, and the council of six people voted whether or not each event would be carried out.

“There are many freshmen on campus, and we hope that these events will get them involved in the university,†Porter said. “These events have been very successful in the past.â€

SAC president Tonika Ingram said SAC’s opening week really helps students.

“Opening week is to help get students involved on campus,†Ingram said. “Research proved that if students aren’t engaged within three days, then they might not stay. This week might help students get involved beyond the first week.â€

Other events for “Viva Las Memphis†week include the one held on Aug. 19, “Movies on the Lawn,†which featured “Now You See Me 2†on the UC Lawn. On Aug. 20, nearly 400 students sang karaoke and played laser tag in the UC. On Aug. 22, the Involvement Fair was held on the University Lawn with over 30 organizations represented. The annual Tail Toss happened during that event, where many bright orange tails were dropped to students below from a helicopter.

Comedy Night is Aug. 26 and will feature the Plastic Cup Boyz, Kevin Hart’s former opening act. The group is made up of comedians Joey Wells, Will “Spank†Horton and Na’im Lynn. This event will be free. On Aug. 27, the “Kickoff Carnival†will be held on the UC Lawn. It will be filled with carnival games, popcorn, corndogs, funnel cake, nachos and a rock-climbing wall.
