Student government seeks new parking app

Students willing to pay for garage parking may get a new phone app that will tell them which lots are full.

Student government is working with campus parking services to develop the app, said David Knowles, president of student government, during Thursday’s student senate meeting.

The project could also include new gates that would automatically raise for a student who’s paid for a priority parking. The current system requires students to swipe their university ID cards before they enter priority parking areas.

Students pay $92 to park in the garage.

Blue Crew is doing away with its traditional membership model, Ricky Kirby, student leader for Blue Crew, said to the senate.

The former membership model required $35 from each student, but gave students a t-shirt and priority seating. The new model will only allow a student to join Blue Crew if they have attended at least four games.

This will reward loyal student Tiger Football fans and weed out those who simply joined Blue Crew to get the shirt, Kirby said.

Kirby also said that section 125 at the Liberty Bowl, a relatively coveted seating area just off center from the end zone, is sold out.

Students, who can go to games for free with their university identification card, have normally filled section 125 in previous seasons. However, Kirby said higher demand for football tickets means there is little chance students will be able to sit there this season.

Student government also approved $1,264 in travel funds for five graduate students.
