Students share thoughts on this week’s SGA election

The University of Memphis Student Government Association will be hosting its elections from now until March 28, and some students plan to get involved as well as advice on how other students should, too.

Antonio Scott announced his campaign for SGA President on March 15 and also revealed that Desiree’ Dyson will be his running mate as Vice President.  Scott and Dyson have made “Forward19” their official campaign slogan, and they are both running unopposed.

Brandon Miller, a sophomore, said it is important for students to make the most out of college by being involved in any way they can because it builds unity among students and it teaches them to be productive in the real world.

“I am voting because it is important for students to get involved, even for small things,” Miller said. “You don’t necessarily have to run for any offices, lead organizations or take control of clubs. Voting can be a way to be relevant and, in most cases, make a difference.”

Christa LaForce, a freshman, agrees with Miller, but he also said students should view it more than just fulfilling one’s duty as a student.

“I didn’t think I would be voting until recently,” LaForce said. “But at the end of the day, these students that are running are our classmates and Tigers, just like us, so I think we should vote out of support and care, not just out of spite.”

Although some on campus would surely agree with Miller and LaForce, there are those who have a dissenting opinion to theirs. Chandler Mathis, a junior, said he believes SGA is good for the school but not as important to where he should go out of his way to vote.

“I don’t think an election like this is that crucial that every single student should have to vote,” Mathis said. “I vote for Presidential elections and primaries, things more for the country as a whole.  To me, things like this is more for the people that are actually involved in SGA already. (The SGA election) won’t affect me no matter what happens, if I am being for real.”
