Whether it’s the Pit Crew at the University of Oregon, the Big O at Ohio State University or the Cameron Crazies at Duke University, the most die-hard fan bases are known for their raucous student sections — and the University of Memphis is no exception.

The Blue Crew was started in 2005 to support U of M athletic programs. The Crew coordinates activities and gathers a student section for games. They are gearing up for a big year.

“We believe the Blue Crew is going to be huge this year,” said Molly Martin, the Spirit Team Coordinator of the Blue Crew and Athletics chair for SGA. “Students at the U of M have so much pride in their Tigers and we hope to carry that out into Blue Crew.”

Martin originally got involved with the Blue Crew because of her passion for the University of Memphis and its athletic programs. She grew up loving sports and wanted to continue by helping other students get involved with athletics.

“I love the Memphis Tigers and I want to share that with other students,” Martin said.

One of the plans the Blue Crew has for the upcoming year is to grow and improve student tailgating activities to get more students involved in setting up and leading chants. Martin wants to connect with other organizations on campus to get as much of the University involved as possible.

“We hope to see everyone at the games this year with the Blue Crew doing what we do best cheering on our Tigers,” Martin said.

Even though every student is a member of Blue Crew, those who would like to be more involved can come to an interest meeting on Aug. 25 at 4 p.m., or to the Blue Crew table during the RSO fair.

“We have so many fun things planned for this upcoming year and we know students will want to be involved,” Martin said.

Although the Blue Crew has been nationally recognized in the past, Charles Uffelman, a member of the Blue Crew, believes at times it was hard to meet the expectations some students have had.

“I think that you are going to see a Blue Crew this year that is going to ‘wow’ the students,” Uffelman said. “We are coming back bigger, better and bolder.”
