Sushi is a core part of Asian culture and a centerpiece of Asian cuisine. For students interested in learning how to make sushi or exploring its history, the Asian American Association’s Sushi Night was the place to be.

The University of Memphis Asian American Association hosted the event on Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the University Center, giving students the chance to learn about the origins of sushi and how to make different types of rolls.

“We are collaborating with students from the Japanese program, and we wanted to have something more interactive,” said LeAnn Sivilay, a member of the Asian American Association. “People usually come to food events, so we decided on sushi.”

Participants were guided through basic sushi-making techniques and offered a variety of fresh ingredients to create their own rolls.

“They told us some instructions, and they got ingredients out here, so now it’s time to make some sushi,” said Adam Abdallat, a junior marketing major.

While the event centered on food, organizers said the larger goal was to foster community and cultural appreciation.

“We are trying to gain more members and help the Japanese program gain more members,” Sivilay said.

By the end of the evening, the room was filled with laughter, conversation, and plenty of sushi.

“Everybody wants to eat sushi,” Sivilay said with a smile.

The Asian American Association's next event is their Halloween Karaoke Night which will take place on Thursday, Oct. 30 in the UC River Room. More information can be found on Tigerzone.
