On Oct. 8, Blue Tom Records, the student-run record label of the University of Memphis, hosted night two of its Blue Tomber event series at the Crews Center for Entrepreneurship.
The Wednesday evening panel focused on life after graduation and featured Lulu Abdun, Morgan Massey, and Blue Tom’s own Jeff Cohran, who stepped in for Liv Cohen in her absence.
The room was filled with upperclassmen eagerly seeking insight on navigating life after graduation. Students asked questions that prompted panelists to reflect on their own transitions from college to a career. They emphasized that success isn’t confined to a single profession and encouraged students to explore opportunities that align with their passions.
When one student asked, “What does success look like for you?” Lulu Abdun, Digital Media Coordinator of City Leadership and Choose 901, replied, “That means being myself to the highest degree, aligning myself with my values, and knowing when to take a break then get back to work.” She added, “It’s important to have boundaries around your work and personal life.”
Morgan Massey, who works with Music Export Memphis, agreed. “Success for me postgrad is that I am gaining experience in all of the aspects of the music industry that I am interested in,” she said.
Massey helps manage the organization’s social media, events, and applications; skills she says have prepared her to excel in the field. She encouraged students to “surround yourself with people that are passionate about what they do” and to seek “people with ambition that you can model yourself after.”
Whitney Hardy, director of the Crews Center, closed the evening by welcoming students interested in entrepreneurship to schedule appointments for mentorship and support, no matter what their interest is.
Students who missed the first two events of the Blue Tomber series can still join in on the insight and networking opportunities. Interested students can follow Blue Tom Records on Instagram for updates on future events.
