The University of Memphis hosted its first Choral Sampler of the semester, drawing a crowd of about 150 people. The event highlighted the talents of student soloists, including Bella Kulinski, Ryan Cashon, Jasmine Knox, Derrick Dotson, Bryce Goodson, Recco Sargent and Lynette Davis.

Conductor Terry Walker opened the program with the Collegiate Choir performing Eliza Gilkyson's "Requiem", which earned loud applause and approval from the audience.

As the concert continued, the crowd grew more engaged, with some audience members nodding their heads in awe at the harmonies filling the auditorium. Each ensemble received standing ovations. Following the Collegiate Choir, the program featured the Mazi ensemble, Tigerchor, and the University Singers.

Tigerchor conductor Dr. Emily Frizzell also spotlighted student conductor Kalen Wilson, who has stepped up to assist while Frizzell takes time away after recently welcoming a newborn. Frizzell honored Wilson by allowing him to lead "Tuba", a traditional Xitsonga piece, while she proudly observed from the audience.

Wilson says that the goal of the choir is to, “sing…not to impress but inspire.” He noted that to prepare for a successful performance it takes, “a lot of studying, hard work, dedication, and attendance.”

Jeffery Peters, a member of the University Singers, encouraged students interested in joining an ensemble to “prepare themselves,” suggesting that sight-reading apps can help with practice. He added that students should watch for audition announcements.

Wilson echoed the invitation, saying, “Come on and sing! You don’t need to know how to sing, you’ll learn how to sing under us.”
