Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is hosting their Pearls are Forever event, which is open to the student body and other visitors. Hosted in the University Center Atrium, the current chapel president, Ishanti Phillips, monitored her booth for participants brave enough to guess the number of pearls in a jar.

However, to be a participant one must first donate to the March of Dimes.

“[It’s] a non-profit organization that strives to help mothers and babies stay healthy. For every $4 a person gives they will have the opportunity to win a $25 gift card. The winner of the contest will be announced on our Instagram page @Rhogamma1920 Friday night. All willing participants will have [Feb.22] until Thursday to put in their guesses,” Phillips said.

The event was put together by their five founders, known as the Pearls, that are looking to stay true to the sorority’s four foundations. These foundations are sisterhood, scholarship, service, and finer womanhood.

Zeta, which is the nickname of the sorority, has been on the University of Memphis grounds since 1968 and, according to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., they have been reflecting these ideals through all members and auxiliary groups by providing “un-totaled hours of voluntary service to outreach programs, scholarship funds and legislation for social and civic change.”

These services, like the Pearls are Forever event, include community service throughout Memphis and even on campus.

“The campus clean-up on Feb. 26 is one opportunity for us and others to join and get hours. There were also other services we helped with like we helped the Memphis Rock Community and a park clean-up” Phillips said.
