For the thirdstraight meet of the indoor season, Cera Chavez set a school record to lead the University of Memphis track and field team at Sunday’s Kevin M. Stephen Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.

This is the second straight week Chavez has improved her mark in the women’s 200-meters. The sophomore ran a 23.97 at the KMS Invitational, beating her time of 24.08 at the Jan. 20 Vanderbilt Invitational. At the time, her 24.08 mark bested the time of Kala Funderburke, who ran a 24.09  in 2013.

The Tigers men’s team set two meet records at the KMS invitational. Senior Luke Vaughn set the record in the men’s shot put with a 58-9.25 (17.91m) mark. The previous record was 58-7.25 (17.86m) at the 2017 invitational. Vaughn also set the school record in the shot put at the Birmingham Crossplex in last year’s American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

The men’s 4x400-meter relay set a KMS Invitational meet record with a time of 3:12.73.  The previous record of 3:12.84 was set last year.  The results are a continued success the relay team has had at the Birmingham Crossplex the past couple of years. In 2016, they set the school record in the event with a time of 3:13.55. They broke the previous record set in 1983. Last year, the Tigers’ 4x400 relay won the conference indoor crown at the same venue.

Freshman DeeNia McMiller was the double-winner for the Tigers. She swept the women’s shot put and weight throw crowns. Sophomore Adam Neelly took the men’s weight throw championship with a personal-best score of 57-4.25 (17.48m). Junior Sadia Burns-Moore won the women’s triple jump with a score of 40-2 (12.24m). The Tigers posted 13 other second and third-place performances at the event.
