WHOLE PIZZA

University of Memphis students voted Memphis Pizza Cafe as the best pizza in Memphis.

This week’s poll on Twitter was to see where students like to get pizza around campus. Of the many chain and locally based pizza parlors near campus, Memphis Pizza Café pulled out victorious over Garibaldi’s Pizza 58 percent to 42 percent after 154 votes were cast.

Originally opened in March 1993, Memphis Pizza Café focuses on “quality instead of speed.†Owners Gary Garlington, Kevin McReynolds and Tom Selakovich said they wanted a locally based restaurant that used fresh, never frozen and daily-made pizza dough.

Since opening, the restaurant has expanded throughout the Memphis area into five locations. The pizza parlor has been nominated for local food awards for the past couple decades and has won “Best Pizza†in both Memphis Magazine’s Subscriber’s Poll and Memphis Flyer’s Reader’s Poll every year since 1994.

Other competitors in the competition for best pizza were Rock ‘n Dough, Mellow Mushroom, Broadway Pizza House, Hog and Hominy, Lost Pizza Co. and High Point Pizza. Next week’s poll will be for the best place near campus to get a drink.
