Redbirds to roost on South Campus

This Saturday, the Memphis Redbirds will be bringing baseball and softball experts to The University of Memphis.

The fourth annual Youth Coaches Clinic will take place in the Turf Room in the Billy J. Murphy Complex on south campus.

The clinic is free and will be held from 10 a.m.-12:45 p.m. with a light lunch following. Registration is at 9:30 a.m.

The clinic will feature a who's who of the baseball and softball community.

St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach, Mike Easier is scheduled to attend.

Other instructors include Redbirds second baseman Stubby Clapp, Crichton baseball coach Rev. Rob Callistro, Redbirds team physician Dr. Barry Phillips of the Campbell Clinic, Amateur Softball Association's Junior Olympic Commissioner Jackie Trentham and Christian Brothers High School Baseball Coach Buster Kelso.

The clinic was founded by the former Los Angeles Dodger, Reggie Williams. Williams is a native of Memphis and is the vice president of community relations with the Redbirds.

He supervises two community and youth focused programs, RBI (Returning Baseball to the Inner-City) and STRIPES (Sports Teams Rurning in the Public Education System).

The coaches clinic is also being used as a tool to benefit youth by assisting coaches in various aspects of baseball and softball.

The clinic was attended by over 75 coaches last year.

Participation is expected to be even higher this year.

"We've had such a response that we had to set a limit," said Redbirds Media Relations Manager, Jason Jones. "The first coaches to respond will have to RSVP."

The clinic had to limit participants to the first 100 coaches to respond.

This year's clinic has had such a response that over half of spots have already been filled.

Jones said that they hope to accomodate those last minute reservations.

"Generally, it's one of those deals that everyone responds between the 8th or the 9th," said Jones.

Coaches interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP.
