In the American Conference semifinals, No. 3 Memphis women’s soccer looked to punch a ticket back to the conference title game as it faced UTSA Thursday. The Tigers had a 3-1 lead with under five minutes remaining in regulation, but they conceded a pair of goals, and the match went into overtime.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods under golden goal rules, which included a controversial no-call that would’ve given Memphis a penalty kick in the second overtime to end the match, UTSA went 4-4 on penalties while the Tigers made just one of four tries and picked up their first loss of the season.
For the first time since 2017, Memphis will not be in the American Conference championship game. Despite the massive upset result, the Tigers will still likely have an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament but the possibility of hosting a home tournament game is now in question.
Memphis will learn its postseason fate on Nov. 10 when the NCAA airs its selection show.
