Greenville, N.C. — The Memphis Tigers volleyball team (11-20) defeated the East Carolina Pirates (12-15) in four sets at Williams Arena on Sunday afternoon, breaking their nine-game losing streak to end the season.
In the first set, the match was initially a back-and-forth affair and was tied 3-3 after a kill from Zaniah Hoskins. From that point, East Carolina went on a 7-0 scoring run and led the set, 10-3. Despite a comeback attempt from the Tigers, the kill from Ekwe Anwah secured the first set for East Carolina, 25-21. Both teams exchanged scores throughout the second set until a kill from Carlia Northcross gave East Carolina a 22-17 lead. Facing the possibility of being down two sets ignited Memphis as Zaniah Hoskins and Janyah Henderson recorded two kills each to secure Memphis a win in the second set, 25-23.
Memphis took their newly gained momentum into the third set and opened on a 5-0 run after the attack error from Kai Bailey of East Carolina. A kill from Carlia Northcross cut Memphis’ lead to two at 15-13, but the Tigers responded with four consecutive kills and took firm control of the set, 19-13. Memphis went on to win the set handily, 25-14. In the final set, Memphis started out strong and led 6-2 following the kill from Janyah Henderson. East Carolina fought back and tied the set at 8-8, after an attack error from Brianna Washington. After the back-and-forth exchange throughout the match, the score was 21-21 late in the fourth set. The Tigers took advantage and recorded four kills, with two kills coming from Zaniah Hoskins and won the final set, 25-23.
The Memphis Tigers did not qualify for 2025 American Conference Volleyball Championship and their season comes to a close with the win against ECU.
