Volleyball falls to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Memphis Tigers volleyball team (10-18) fell short against UAB (11-14) in three sets at Bartow Arena on Wednesday night, extending their losing streak to seven games.  

In the first set, Memphis started off strong and got out to a 9-4 lead, with Za’Niyah Boyles and Abby Jones recording two kills each. Despite this hot start from Memphis, UAB clawed their way back into the game. Multiple errors committed by the Tigers led to UAB tying the set at 10-10. From then on, both teams exchanged scores until the service ace by Mandy Lawson gave UAB a 24-22 lead. UAB went on to win the first set 25-23.  

In the second set, UAB got off to a fast start and led 0-4 after the service ace by Mandy Lawson. Memphis would eventually fight back and even the score at 10-10, following the kill from Za’Niya Boyles. From that moment forward, the Tigers made six errors and found themselves down at 13-19. UAB would go on to win this set 25-20. In the third set, the Tigers led 5-2 early, behind two kills from Zaniah Hoskins. Three straight attack errors from Zaniah Hoskins gave UAB a four-point lead late in the third set. Despite cutting the lead to one, the Tigers were unable to overcome UAB and lost the final set 23-25.  

With three games left in the regular season, Memphis sits in last place in the American Conference and have lost to UAB twice this season. The Tigers will return to Elma Roane Fieldhouse to face South Florida on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
