DENTON, Texas —The Memphis Tigers volleyball team (10-17) came up short against North Texas (18-6) in three sets at the North Texas Volleyball Center on Friday evening, extending their losing streak to six games.
In the first set, the Tigers and North Texas were all even at 6-6, until the Mean Green went on 7-0 scoring run, making the score 13-6. After a kill by UNT's Lilly Croshaw, the Mean Green extended its lead to 19-9 and went on to win the first set, 25-16. In the second set, Memphis got off to a strong start and led early 6-3. Despite the hot start, North Texas crawled their way back into the match and eventually took the lead 11-10, following a kill by Reese Watters. From that point on, the Mean Green never looked back and won the second set 25-21.
On the verge of victory, North Texas jumped ahead 8-3 in the beginning of the third set, with Lily Crowshaw recording four kills early. The Tigers had cut the lead to one, making the score 21-20 late in the third set, but North Texas stayed resilient and closed out the set 25-22.
With only four games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers are in last place in the American Conference and have lost to North Texas for the second time this season. The Tigers will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face off against UAB on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
