A guide to off-campus resources for overwhelmed college students

With the stress of college weighing heavily on students in Memphis, a variety of local organizations provide support for scholars who need additional help.

For many college students, the pressure of maintaining grades, staying employed and balancing a social life can create significant mental strain. Students at the University of Memphis have reported that the stresses of college get in the way of their success, which can lead to mental, academic and financial hardships.

Fortunately, several community resources are available to help students navigate the adversities associated with college life.

Advance Memphis has established itself as an avenue for young adults seeking assistance with everyday stressors. The South Memphis–based nonprofit offers programs designed to help individuals break harmful cycles, build economic stability and restore dignity through knowledge.

Through free counseling, money management classes, and mentorship programs, Advance Memphis can be beneficial for college students that need a helping hand.

Another resource available to college students is the Mid-South Food Bank. Founded in 1981, the food bank is an independent charity with more than 100 partner agencies serving food-insecure individuals across the region. At the University of Memphis, data shows that food insecurity can hinder students’ academic performance and overall well-being.

The Mid-South Food Bank and its partner pantries offer access to reliable nutrition, which can directly support student success. For those without transportation, the organization also operates mobile pantries throughout the area.

Students facing mental and emotional strain have additional options as well. The Arkwings Foundation, located in North Memphis, offers wellness programs through arts and nature. These programs provide a calming space for students who feel overwhelmed by academic responsibilities and the long-term pressure of earning a degree.

While college stress affects students across Memphis, these local organizations offer vital assistance to those in need. Together with on-campus services at the University of Memphis, they form a broad network of support that provides students the tools to succeed.
