Memphis Volleyball fell to 10-12 and 1-6 in conference play in a 3-2 hard fought loss at home against Tulsa at Elma Roane Fieldhouse Friday night.
Memphis won a close first set, 25-23. It was their first won set in a conference game since September 26th when they beat Tulane.
“Despite the recent struggles, I think the team has had a good season with their star player hurt, and all the roster turnaround as well as a new coach,” said Memphis fan Dennis Duke.
Memphis won the second set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the game. The Tigers led 17-13, but Tulsa quickly took the lead at 17-18. Memphis responded with a run and went on to win the set.
Tulsa, with their backs against the wall, dominated the third set, winning it 25-16. They kept their momentum going into the fourth set and jumped out to a 12-5 lead. They didn’t look back and won the fourth set 25-11, tying the game at 2-2.
The fifth set was competitive with Memphis having an 8-5 lead. It went back and forth and was tied at 14-14. Tulsa scored twice in a row to win the game. The winning play was challenged by Memphis coach Cheri Lindsay, but the call stood to give Memphis their sixth straight conference loss.
“It was a crazy game and that call was really close but it could’ve gone either way so I can’t be mad about it,” said University of Memphis student Jacob Cooper.
Memphis will play at home again on Sunday against North Texas at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
