Brandon Washington, a 22-year-old Orange Mound native and senior at the University of Memphis, has announced his candidacy for Shelby County Commission District 10.
Washington, who made history at 19 becoming one of the youngest Memphians to run for City Council, said he hopes to bring “new energy, accountability, and a community-driven perspective” to county government. A political science major and former foster youth, Washington has been active in youth advocacy and public policy.
His work in Washington, D.C., helped influence the 2023 Fiscal Responsibility Act, which expanded SNAP eligibility for aged-out foster youth, veterans and people experiencing homelessness.
“I’m running because our community deserves leadership that listens,” Washington said. “This campaign isn’t about me, it’s about building opportunity, stability and accountability for every neighborhood in District 10.” District 10 includes Orange Mound, Bethel Grove and Sherwood, communities Washington described as “the heartbeat of Memphis.”
