Members of the University of Memphis Student Activities Council gathered in the University Center on Thursday for the annual Roar for More Canned Food Drive, a Homecoming Week tradition aimed at fighting food insecurity in the Mid-South.
The event encouraged students to donate canned goods while learning more about the Student Activities Council (SAC) and its mission to foster community involvement through service and campus engagement.
“The food drive is a fun way to get more involved in the Homecoming festivities and to donate to a good cause,” said Ariana Stringfellow, SAC chair. “It’s about giving back while celebrating our Tiger spirit.”
Though turnout was lighter than in past years, organizers said the spirit of giving remained strong. Tables lined with canned goods reflected the dedication of students who stopped by to contribute, while SAC members greeted passersby with smiles and encouragement.
“The Student Activities Council is more than just fun,” said Fidel Jones, SAC chair. “We also serve a purpose to give back to the community and help students find ways to make a difference.”
Jonathan Rogers, who provided event security, said the drive offered a simple but meaningful way to support others.
“If you ever want to give back to your community, this is one way to make a lasting impression,” Rogers said. “It makes you feel better, and the people you’re helping feel better too.”
Despite fewer donations than in previous years, organizers said the event’s message rang louder than ever.
“The campus may have been quiet,” Stringfellow said, “but the spirit of generosity still roared across campus, quiet but strong.”
