Memphis' Leonardo Mazzoni raced to a top-ten finish in the Twilight Classic, and he was second on the team behind Kenny Guy at the Crimson Classic in Alabama last Friday.

The Memphis men's cross country team entered the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) South Region rankings for the first time in three years this week, coming in at No. 14.

The USTFCCCA South Region features every Division 1 program from the states of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida. The top two teams in the region earn an automatic qualifier to Nationals.

Memphis surged into the rankings following an eighth place finish at the Crimson Classic in Alabama, where the Tigers beat two teams ranked in the previous poll, No. 7 Auburn and No. 12 Miami. Memphis is led by junior Kenny Guy, who finished 25th overall at the Crimson Classic with a time of 24:43.6 at the 8.1 kilometer course.

The Tigers will compete in the American Conference Championship meet in Greenville, N.C. on Nov. 1, where they will compete with the likes of nationally ranked Tulane and perennial conference power Tulsa.
