The University of Memphis hosted its annual Explore Your Major Day Wednesday in the University Center Ballroom, drawing students and faculty from across campus.
The event, organized by academic advisor Ciara Williams and the advising staff, ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and featured dozens of academic departments. Williams said the goal was to connect students with faculty and advisors to help them make informed decisions about their studies.
“This event is really for anyone who is undeclared and for Freshmen and Sophomore students to get a feel of what they may want to major in," said Williams. "Even you do have a major, it’s a chance to get to know your advisors.”
Departments including Social Work, English and World Languages set up booths with information about their programs. Faculty, advisors and graduate students answered questions and shared details about course offerings, while also handing out snacks, drinks and giveaways such as pencils and pins.
The English Department stood out by dressing in superhero costumes and inviting students to their open house Oct. 8–9 in the Patterson Hall lobby.
Students who entered the ballroom were greeted by advising staff, given an event map and could register for prizes.
Across the hall in the UC River and Bluff rooms, students also had the opportunity to speak with faculty during the Mid-South Law Review and learn about upcoming events such as the University of Memphis Health Professions Fair.
The overall turnout of the event was strong, with many filling the ballroom throughout the day and many taking the opportunity to connect directly with faculty and staff members.
