The University of Memphis marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday with a kickoff dinner hosted by the Hispanic Student Association. The event featured free food with live music and dance performances, opening a series of campus programs celebrating Hispanic culture.
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed nationally from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The dates coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The dinner drew students, faculty and staff from across campus to enjoy cultural performances and learn more about the significance of the month.
The Hispanic Student Association’s next event is a tailgate hosted with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers before the Memphis football game against Arkansas on Sept. 20 in the tan parking lot. More information can be found on the organization’s Instagram pages.
