About a month into the Fall semester, the University of Memphis hosted its fall All-Majors Career Fair on Sept. 24. The event is beneficial for all students, especially those graduating this fall or next spring.

Students were encouraged to wear professional attire. Men wore dress shirts, pants, and shoes. Women wore business style dresses, or a dress shirt with dress pants and flats or heels. Students were also encouraged to bring copies of their resumes.

Several employers participated in the fair, including Action News 5 (Gray Media), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, FedEx, and more.

Mil’Tonique Williams, BS, CNIM, a surgical neurophysiologist at Intranerve Neuroscience, was one of the people at the IntraNerve Neuroscience table at the career fair. She explained her the role of her job to interested students.

“We go in and we monitor the nervous system from the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles to kind of help the surgeon predict outcomes or prevent deficits,” Williams said. She also shared why this is important in the medical field.

“This is actually becoming more of a standard of care. A lot of what we do is preventative focused. We kind of like to say that we are advocates for the patient while they’re asleep,” Williams said.

Students checked in at the door by showing their University ID and received name tags listing their names and majors. Many arrived within the first hour.

Loknadh Venkata Krishna Sai Kona, a UofM student majoring in data science, said he came to the fair “to explore different opportunities.”

“My primary goal is to get how to approach the [employers] first so that I can know how to do the exact work to get placed in the company,” he said. "I’m looking for a data science role like data analytics, data engineer, or data intern."

While all students were encouraged to attend, the fair offered particular advantages to those graduating soon, giving them a chance to connect with employers, learn about job openings and share their resumes.

Williams emphasized the value of career fairs on college campuses.

“I believe they are important because I think it’s good for young professionals to see what all jobs are out there," she said. "Honestly, this particular position is very niche, and most of my colleagues who are in this position had never heard about it until they met someone else in the position. So, I think that this exposure is very good for people who might not know that there are jobs out there that they would like. They just haven’t heard about them yet."
