No. 10 Women’s soccer escapes Charlotte with 1-0 win to open conference play

CHARLOTTE, Nc. - The tenth-ranked Memphis women’s soccer team opened its conference slate with a road match against the Charlotte 49ers, escaping with a 1-0 victory.

In a very physical contest, the visitors dominated time of possession and out shot their opponents 18-6, but Charlotte keeper Harlee Head recorded a season-high nine saves to keep the game scoreless deep into the match.

Despite the phenomenal defensive effort by the 49ers, the Tigers proved to be too much as freshman forward Taliah Brooks found an opportunity off of a deflected shot in the 85th minute to give Memphis the deciding goal. After the goal, the home team surged furiously to salvage a tie out of the gritty game but the Tigers held on and secured the win.

This result extends the Tigers’ undefeated streak in the regular season of American conference play to 23 games in a row, which dates back to October of 2022. Memphis will continue its quest for a fourth conference title in five years when the team returns to the Park Ave. campus on Sept. 18 when they play host to the UAB Blazers at 7:00 p.m. CT. The game will be available on ESPN+.
