New NPPA chapter offers opportunities for student visual storytellers

Many college students enjoy joining clubs where they can meet new people who share similar interests. Now, University of Memphis students with a passion for photography, videography or photojournalism have a new club on campus.

On Sept. 10, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) student chapter at the University of Memphis hosted a welcome meeting for students interested in visual storytelling.

Dr. Claire Rounkles, faculty advisor for the NPPA student chapter and a professor of media law and visual journalism, said she started the organization to create more opportunities for students.

“I wanted to bring more opportunities to visual journalists on campus as well as photographers. I have been a part of NPPA for a few years and I also was a member at my own alma mater,” Rounkles said.

During the meeting, Rounkles introduced students to NPPA and the College Photographer of the Year (CPOY), a photography and videography competition for college students.

The club welcomes students of all skill levels, whether they want to sharpen their abilities or pursue photography as a career.

“We will have skills workshops, we talk about competitions, we also have professionals come in for portfolio reviews and they’ll talk about their own experiences,” Rounkles said.

Alyah Armmer, a graduate student in attendance, said she came to the meeting because she plans to pursue photojournalism after graduation.

“I like anything that deals with art,” Armmer said about her photography interests.

Students who join will also have the chance to improve their editing and storytelling skills.

Rounkles offered simple advice for those interested in photography.

“Just get involved. Pick up a camera, start taking photos, take some classes. We offer two great classes, take photojournalism,” she said.
