Memphis football head coach Ryan Silverfield spoke to the media Monday ahead of his team's season opening game against UT Chattanooga on Saturday.
Silverfield repeatedly emphasized his excitement for a new season, mentioning the amount of unknowns he still has about his roster.
"There's nothing but pure excitement for college football," Silverfield said. "There's so much excitement, but there's always angst."
Memphis released its official depth chart Monday morning, which, notably, lacked Purdue transfer wide receiver CJ Smith.
"He's been battling some injuries most of training camp." Silverfield said of Smith. "I do expect him to help us out at some point this season."
Since the end of last season, Silverfield has become a father of twin girls. He believes that they will help him become a better coach.
"It's an absolute blessing. My focus, even more, has just been on the things that matter to me," Silverfield said. "It’s finding that right balance. The hundred-hour work weeks and pouring over film, that will not change."
As for their opponent on the field Saturday, coach Silverfield was very complimentary. He brought up competitive games against high quality competition from the past few seasons, and he pointed out that Chattanooga has had seven consecutive winning seasons.
With a new starting quarterback and virtually no returning experience at wide receiver, Silverfield and Memphis fans alike will get to learn a lot about his offense against Chattanooga.
"I expect our fans to show up and be loud and proud," Silverfield said. "I can't wait to see them. It's been too long."
The Tigers will take to the field at 3:30 p.m. CT Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The game will be on ESPN+.
