‘Discover Your Major’ Day to help students with major choice

Each year students who are undecided on their major have the opportunity to gain knowledge about many university major and minors.

The University of Memphis will host its annual “Discover Your Major Day” in the University Center ballroom Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This event will be one of the only times that students can have access to all the majors offered by the university,” Carl M. Chando, director of the academic counseling center, said.

This day is usually a popular campus event with an attendance rate of over 1,000 attendees every year, Chando said. The event allows students to be more aware of majors and minors on campus and helps students connect with tutors, faculty members and other students.

Vanessa Brocks, a counselor at the Academic Counseling Center in Wilder Tower, said Discover Your Major Day is a good way for students to choose minors and other fields of study.

“It is a college fair-type atmosphere, and students have a great time at the event,” Brocks said. “Walk around the event and take a look into tables that not only deal with a major that you are interested in but take a look at tables you’ve probably never heard of.”

Becoming more aware of the many majors on campus can help students feel less stressed and intimidated when it comes to picking the one that fits them. The U of M campus is filled with many majors students can choose

“Students who tend to learn and connect more with a major tend to retain more,” Brocks said. “If you are at Discover Your Major Day, and you plan on changing your major, get in touch with your academic advisor and let them know about the change. After that, talk to the department about being advised by them.”

For any students undecided about a major, there are over 50 academic department representatives available at the event who will be able to answer questions related to majors, minors and other available opportunities. The event will be set up with booths for each major on campus that will help students gain background information to point them to the major that best fits them.

“Try to stick with your major at first and don’t give up too easy,” Jalen Hines, sophomore biology major, said. “If it’s not working out, then consider switching things up.”

“Go to ‘Discover Your Major Day’ so you can see all the majors and get insight on the one that best fits you,” Lauren Walton, exercise and sports science senior, said.
