This is a response to an opinion, “‘Say no to racism’ by putting a white woman through school,” written by editor-in-chief Jonathan Capriel and published in Wednesday’s edition of the Daily Helmsman.
I am a student at the University of Memphis and I have a couple issues with your article in The Daily Helmsman. Your job as a journalist is to report all facts not just those that support your opinion on matters.
My first issue is that although you quoted some donors, you only quoted white donors. I have followed Allie Dowdle’s GoFundMe account since the beginning, and I have noticed a diversity of donors. In fact, her largest donations were given from people who are not white. Why did you not use any of those quotes? Maybe because those donors didn't fit your mold for belittling a young adult who thought this was her only choice.
My second issue is that you said you "blame white people who don't know or understand what racism is and donated to her." That stunned me. If you're blaming people that donated to her, then you blame all people not just white people.
I'm in an interracial relationship and have been since I was a junior in high school. I went through a very similar situation, except I took a route which stripped me of an Ivy League education and landed me here working a full-time job, a part-time job, swimming in debt and putting myself through college.
I wouldn't want my worse enemy going through what I have. Maybe you should have dug a little deeper, instead of using her story to give you a reason to write an article shaming white people.
