Fans of the Bruce Willis film "In Country" will get their chance tonight to meet the award-winning author of the novel that served as the Golden Globe-nominated film's inspiration.
The University of Memphis' River City Writers Series will host Bobbie Ann Mason as their guest author during a two-day event being held in the University Center's River Room and room 403 in Patterson Hall.
Beginning at 8 p.m., Mason will read select passages from and autographing copies of her newest work, "The Girl in The Blue Beret," based on her father-in-law's experiences fighting in World War II.
Cary Holladay, director of the River City Writers Series, said that Mason's novel is a "riveting experience" and an "amazing, entertaining story."
Tomorrow at 10:30 p.m. fine arts students and fiction writers Brandon and Wade Davis will interview her.
Mason attributes her time spent reading books while growing up on an isolated farm as her inspiration to become an author.
"I loved the words on the pages," she said. "The love of language and the way it works, as well as the reading, is the primary pleasure in writing."
