University of Memphis women's golfer Marissa Steen recorded a 54-hole score of 220 to claim second place at the Conference USA Women's Golf Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Steen's runner-up finish is the best by a Memphis individual in the C-USA championship since Alexa Porter tied for second in 2008. Her +4 performance earned her a place on the all-tournament team for the first time in her career.
UTEP's Teresa Nogues narrowly defeated Steen for the individual title with a score of 218.
"I'm so proud of Marissa," golf coach Beth Harrelson said. "She played fantastic and showed great leadership."
Sophomore Alex Aläng tied for 18th place and recorded her second consecutive top-20 finish at the C-USA Championship with a score of 230, after finishing in a tie for seventh in 2010. Junior Kathleen Glavin finished tied for 21st with 231, sophomore Julia Hodgon tied for 30th with 235, and freshman Ashley Kees finished in a tie for 38th with a three-round total of 241.
"I'm really proud of the team for holding its composure together," Harrelson said. "This course was not set up easily, and the wind really kicked up today."
The Lady Tigers finished fourth overall as a team with a 54-hole total of 911. UTEP claimed the championship with 904. Tulsa (906) and Tulane (907) rounded out the top four.
With Steen's performance in the C-USA championship and her accolades throughout the season, she could qualify for the NCAA Regionals as an individual. NCAA selections will be made Monday.
