Freshmen leading the way for cross country

The University of Memphis cross-country teams will head east this weekend as they prepare for the University of Alabama at Little Rock Invitational held at Rebsamen Golf Course.

Both the men and women will kick off the race with 5-kilometer runs, at 6 and 6:45 p.m., respectively.

Coach Doug Clark said with one event already behind them, he hopes to see faster times from the younger players.

"The freshmen got a meet under their belts last weekend," he said. "I don't expect them to be as nervous."

With nerves aside, Clark will rely on freshmen to help carry the team this meet.

On the women's side, the squad will look to freshmen Ellen Kildal and Jenny Johnston, who were the top scorers for a Lady Tiger squad that finished eighth at the Belmont/Vanderbilt Opener last weekend.

For the men, freshman James Maglasang will look to top the 13th-place finish he achieved in the first race.

In addition to UALR, the Tigers will compete against six other schools: Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling, Hendrix College and Christian Brothers University.
