University of Memphis students can submit work Jan.17 and Jan.18 for the 24th Annual Juried Student Exhibition. Any U of M student, who was enrolled in an art class in 2006, is eligible to submit work.
The exhibit will open to the public Jan. 27 at The Art Museum of The University of Memphis. There will be a reception from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m.
Cash prizes include $600 for best of show, $500 for the undergraduate award, $1,000 for the graduate purchase award, $500 for the photography award and a $250 ArtLab award. Several merchandise certificate awards sponsored by local art stores will also be presented.
This year's recipient for the ArtLab award is Elisha Gold. Students submitted proposals in November in order to have the ArtLab exhibit ready for opening night.
Gail Roberts, art professor at San Diego State University, is the juror for this year's exhibit.
"When I jury shows, I try to look for what I feel is the highest quality," Roberts said.
She looks for knowledge about the subject, a sense of art history and influences from contemporary art.
Roberts describes herself as a visual artist with a focus on painting and mixed media as a response to influences on the environment.
Her work has been shown in galleries throughout California, in Chicago and at the Musee Rochefort-en-terre in Brittany, France.
Roberts' piece "Tree Lines" is permanently displayed at San Diego International Airport.
Roberts will speak about her work and influences on Jan. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeman Journalism Building, room 100.
Entry forms are available at www.amum.org. Students are limited to two entries each.
