Say Anything does just that throughout their new LP with the shocking and rather unexpected lyrics teeter-totter between absolutely crazy and pure genius.
The 22-year-old lead singer, Max Bemis, is definitely a force to be reckoned with delivering lyrics that will blow you away and make you think about your life.
He was named number nine on Spin magazine's list of "The 25 Hottest Stars Under 25" despite suffering from bipolar disorder. Bemis' music probably shouldn't be taken seriously. The music is riddled with metaphors. As if it wasn't obvious enough, there's a song on the album called "It's a Metaphor Fool," aimed at everyone who doesn't understand the lyrics.
Being bipolar may play a part in how one song can go from flattering compliments to flat-out morbidly hysterical - if it's not taken too seriously. Their radio release "Alive with the Glory of Love" is not a favorite, but is a perfect example of their blunt honesty and use of metaphors.
Say Anything's style is interesting and engaging, though at times strange. They are not afraid to be blunt, honest and openly emotional.
The (Boston) Phoenix reviewed one of their live performances in such a way that sums up the band's aura in a nutshell:
"The evening proved that this is one of those rare bands whose power and energy and emotion and intelligence and sneer and tenacity are all so powerful it's difficult to say anything that captures them all the way, although (freaking) amazing comes pretty close."
