Former University of Memphis student Mahmoud Maawad was planning a terrorist attack within two blocks from The U of M campus, according to an indictment released by the U.S. Attorney's office.
Maawad was arrested and charged in September with wire fraud and using a false social security number.
During an investigation of Maawad, police found a pilot's uniform as well as flight training materials in his apartment at 3557 Mynders, two blocks from The U of M.
Information released Wednesday by the authorities claim that Maawad was visiting online chatrooms and Web sites affiliated with different terrorists organizations including Al Qaeda.
Authorities also claim Maawad was researching how to smuggle weapons and bombs through airport security.
The U.S. Attorney's office refused to comment on the pending case.
Maawad had been living in Memphis illegally since 1999 when he moved to the United States from Egypt.
While living in Memphis, Maawad purchased several instructional DVDs on how to fly and land aircraft, according to authorities.
Information released in the indictment also claims that Maawad applied for pilot lessons but was denied by the Transportation Security Administration.
Maawad is being held without bond and is scheduled for trial in March.
