Tigerweb has new features to ease registration pains for U of M students

Students often cringe when they realize that registration isright around the corner and that time has reared its ugly headagain. Dates and deadlines are of vital importance for studentsrushing to register for classes that are only offered once a year, schedule advising appointments and worry when tuition payment isdue.

Many University of Memphis students may not realize it yet, butthe pains of registration and enrollment are finally lessnerve-racking.

By accessing Tigerweb and clicking on the registrar link, students can find anything they want to know concerning admissions, advising, registration, fees and financial aid and even directionsand parking.

"The fall semester is the first time that the Web site has beenavailable," said Registrar Noel Schwartz. "The information isorganized in a logical sequence, with advising on the front end andpayment last. By linking it that way, we are able to providestudents with an understanding of the entire process instead of onepiece of it."

On the Web site, information begins with calendars that allowstudents to view important dates and deadlines pertaining to thesemester's registration. Admissions information follows sincestudents must be admitted before they are able to register.

The information on the site is more thorough than the printedschedule that used to come out since registration is just one pieceof the process, said Schwartz.

"The Web schedule is absolutely more effective than the printedschedule," said William Akey, assistant vice provost for EnrollmentServices. "Once the schedule is printed, we cannot change it. Thebeauty of the Web is that it can instantly be updated and changescan be made immediately -- that is the greatest impact."

The advising home page is where students can track academicprogress through the degree audit link, find information onplacement tests, high school deficiencies, the Regents OnlineDegree Program and more.

The next heading gives an overview of registration by providinginformation about how to register for classes, check grades andchange PIN numbers and personal information. Following theregistration headline is information concerning fees, financial aidand scholarships.

Finally, students can find locations of buildings on campus andwhere to park under the directions and parking heading.

"We actually did not have an increase in telephone calls forquestions concerning registration," said Schwartz. "Students wereable to easily access the information that they needed."

Enrollment services officials want students to know that theyare always interested in student feedback and emailing them(address is on Web site) with suggestions and comments is the bestway to have questions and concerns addressed.

"The Web location lets students come to one site and get linkedto other important sites to get access to register completely, "said Akey. "Getting information from one location cuts out a lot offrustration for students."
