When the Tigers went to the National Invitational Tournament in New York, nobody could have been happier than Shamel Jones.

Although New York seems far away to some, it is just where senior he wanted to be.

Jones is from Brooklyn, New York and returned to his roots last Tuesday when he and the rest of the Tigers played in NIT tournament.

In this year's Conference USA tournament, Jones averaged 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and shot 76.9 percent from the field (10 of 13) and 73 percent from the free throw line (11 of 15).

This season Jones had a career high of 17 points and 10 rebounds, in the Tiger's regular season loss to Cincinnati.

He scored 15 points, had six rebounds and three blocked shots in 24 minutes off the bench against the Bearcats in a C-USA tournament semifinal game.

In his second year as a Tiger, Jones began the season grabbing seven rebounds against his former school in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Jones scored 11 points going five for eight from the floor against the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

He received his first start of the year against Arkansas and had seven points, going five of six from the free throw line.

After not playing in the Tigers's previous game against South Florida, Jones scored 12 points in the Tigers's loss at Cincinnati after he upped his season high to 13 points, during a 6 for 10 performance from the field against Houston.

Jones came off the bench to score a season-high 15 points, going seven of eight at the free throw line and four of five from the field.

The forward had a season high three blocks in the Tigers' win over South Florida in the first round of the Conference USA tournament.

In the 1998-99 season, Jones scored in double figures for the first time as a Tiger finishing with 10 points against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He also had six rebounds, two steals and blocked shots in that game.

Jones played 45 minutes in the Tigers' overtime win against Ole Miss, he scored a career high 16 points and had four assists.

As a true freshman, Jones started his career at Georgetown University and saw action in all 30 games for the team.

He averaged 1.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 7.5 minutes per game.

Jones set a career high with eight points and 10 rebounds against Delaware State.

As a prep star, Jones was a second team All-City selection at Paul Robeson High School. He averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots per game his senior year for coach Larry Major.
