As the Memphis Tigers (5-5, 2-3) head into Friday night’s contest against the 24th ranked Houston Cougars (8-1, 7-0), Memphis seeks to become bowl eligible once again. They fell last Saturday to East Carolina 30-29 in overtime in their first opportunity to gain entry into a bowl game. This week, the Tigers go on the road with the chance to hand Houston their first conference loss of the season. For that to occur, several factors must lean in favor of the Tigers for them to emerge victorious.

The former Chair of the Department of Theatre, Dr. Mike Osborn is set to introduce 'A “Hair”-Raising Performance” in the University Center on Wednesday from 3-5pm. The documentary will detail the performance of the controversial Broadway musical “Hair” that was put on by the university nearly 50 years ago.

The Memphis Tigers women’s basketball hosted Big East opponent Xavier Nov. 9. The Tigers are coming off a disappointing season last year, winning just two non-conference games and two conference games all season. The Musketeers also are coming off a disappointing season, winning one non-conference game and two conference games all season. Despite those setbacks, the Tigers went into this game looking for a fresh start.

Coming off a huge victory over SMU, the Memphis Tigers (5-4. 2-3 AAC) face the opportunity to complete a conquest that’s seemed to be a ritual: reaching a bowl game. However, standing in their way happens to be a formidable Eastern Carolina (5-4, 3-2 AAC) squad who’s just as determined to reach a bowl game as well. Head Coach Ryan Silverfield was very complimentary of ECU and its prolific quarterback ahead of the matchup.

With the Daily Helmsman’s 90th anniversary magazine on the horizon, I had the opportunity to gaze into the history of this student news outlet. Throughout our nearly century-long lifespan, I have noticed that we have not been engaged with the student body the way we once were. That shouldn’t be the way a student newspaper operates.

Thousands of years ago, candles lined the streets of the ancient Indian city, Ayodhya. Fireworks burst through the air celebrating the return of King Rama and marking the first Diwali celebration. For 14 years Rama, one of the incarnations of the god Vishnu, had been in exile. During that time, his wife was kidnapped by King of the Demons, Ravana. After a long and strenuous battle, Rama defeated Ravana and returned home.

The Tigers are looking to keep their hopes of bowl eligibility alive as they face the SMU Mustangs at 11 am on Saturday of homecoming weekend. The last time the Mustangs came to Memphis was one of the most memorable days in the history of the Memphis football program. College Gameday took over Beale Street, and Memphis was live on ABC Primetime Saturday night with both teams sporting a top 25 ranking. Memphis came out the victor in a classic game that put the rest of the country on notice.
