To commemorate Black History Month, Crosstown Arts presented The Memphis 13 film, which tells the story of 13 first graders who, in October 1961, became some of the youngest pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement. The documentary was made by Daniel Kiel, a professor at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Following the film's showing, there was a Q and A, during which some members of the Memphis 13 answered audience member's questions about their experience.

Entering the final two weeks of the regular season, the Memphis Tigers currently sit at 6th place in the AAC standings. With Memphis’ only real hope of making the NCAA tournament being winning the conference tournament, they must do whatever they can to end the regular season to best set themselves up to do that.

The Nashville Predators ended the LA Kings’ winning streak at four when they took them down 4-1 in their final meeting this season. With the dub, Nashville improves to 30-25-2 of the year. Colton Sissons had a three-point game (1 goal, 2 assists) while Juuse Saros made 27 saves on 28 saves faced in net. This was also the Predators third straight win. Yakov Trenin scored the 1st goal of the game to make it 1-0 Nashville, cutting to the net and tucking a backhand home past goalie David Rittich. Kevin Fiala, the former Nashville Predator, tied the game up at one a piece with 52.8 seconds left to go in the 1st period on a two-man advantage powerplay. He shot it from the slot, top shelf past the glove of Juuse Saros. This sent the game to intermission with both teams tied at 1-1 at the end of the 1. Mark Jankowski put Nashville up 2-1, scoring on the rebound on a loose puck out in front of the net. This would be the only goal in the 2nd period as the Predators headed into intermission with the one-goal lead. The Kings had chances in the 3rd period but could not capitalize. Quinton Byfield had a breakaway in that period, but he was stopped by the glove of Saros. Colton Sissons and Jeremy Lauzon each added empty netters for the 4-1 final as the Predators walked out of Hollywood with a win over the Kings. Nashville continues their five-game road trip through California Saturday against the San Jose Sharks. The puck drops at 9:00 p.m. CT.

The Memphis baseball team defeated Central Arkansas emphatically, winning 14-4 in an eight-inning, mercy rule contest. Getting to play in front of family and friends for the first time, the Tigers’ bats showed up in a big way, tying the school record for home runs in a game with 7.

Over 2,500 students from around the United States traveled to the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA, for the 51st Annual Jubilee Conference hosted by the Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO). Twelve students from the University of Memphis attended in conjunction with Hope Church Memphis, which has an active campus ministry program through CCO and involves students from all around Memphis. The conference spanned two days, from February 16 until February 18. Its overall purpose is to help college students connect their faith path to their career choice, regardless of major.

Each Wednesday at 6 p.m., Belltower Coffeehouse on the Highland Strip hosts their weekly trivia night. The idea for trivia night was first suggested by a server with a flare for performance. Josie Grooms is a full-time middle school teacher, a part- time barista, and possesses a passion for hosting trivia nights.

Reports from the National Education Association indicate a 700 percent increase in incidents compared to the same period last year. Memphis went down to Jacksonville, Alabama to take on the Gamecocks in the first series of the Matt Riser era. In a series between new head coaches, Steve Bieser’s squad was able to take two out of three against Matt Riser’s Tigers with two different extra-inning bombs. There were many positives to take away from the first action of Tigers’ baseball, but some inopportune mistakes cost Memphis.
