Memphis basketball is many things under Penny Hardaway, but it is never boring. Late Tuesday night, reports began to surface of mass firings of Penny Hardaway’s staff, only two months away from the start of the season. These were confirmed with the announcement this morning from the athletic department that assistant coach Rick Stansbury, advisor to the head coach Faragi Phillips, director of player development Jamie Rosser, and director of player development and recruiting coordinator Demetrius Dyson had all been removed from their positions.

Memphis Football kicked off their 2024 campaign on August 31 in their newly renovated stadium, Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, now dubbed, “the Liberty Hole.” Memphis cruised to a 40-0 shutout victory against North Alabama (0-1) in front of the 25,849 faithful fans in attendance.

The 2024 season is the most anticipated in Memphis Tigers football history, coming with the highest expectations the program has ever seen. For the first time ever, Memphis was chosen to win the AAC in the conference preseason poll, even including the 2019 Cotton Bowl year. Additionally, a Group of 5 team is guaranteed to be in the College Football Playoff with its new 12 team format, and Memphis is among the top contenders for it.

The offseason is the greatest time of year for Memphis Tiger basketball under Penny Hardaway, and that idea was reaffirmed Monday. In the span of two hours, Hardaway added two point guards in Texas transfer Tyrese Hunter and George Mason transfer Baraka Okojie.

Friday morning, a landmark name, image, and likeness deal in college athletics was announced, as FedEx pledged 5 million dollars annually to University of Memphis student athletes over the next five years, making headlines nationally due to this deal being the first of its kind. This is the largest corporate partnership with a university athletic department for name image and likeness in the entirety of college athletics, and comes shortly after Fred Smith, founder of FedEx, donated 50 million dollars to the Simmons Bank Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium renovations. Initially, the deal will be focused on funding NIL for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and additional women’s sports at the university.

Two marquee home games were announced for Memphis basketball’s non-conference schedule Wednesday, as Mississippi State and Ole Miss are coming to FedExForum this year. Both are a part of home and home series, with Memphis set to make the return trips to Starkville and Oxford in the 2025-2026 season. The dates of the games are unknown at this time.

Memphis Garden Club presented its biennial Memphis Flower Show on April 13 and 14 at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens. One of only eight major flower shows that are sanctioned by the Garden Club of America, its theme this year was Rhythm & Hues. The show was divided into five distinct divisions: Floral Design, Horticultural Design, Photography, Botanical Arts and Conservation.
