Students get caught with marijuana at residence halls

Two University of Memphis students were allegedly caught with marijuana in their dorms on campus February.

This adds to the list of drug and alcohol related incidents on campus this semester.

The most recent incident occurred in the U of M’s recently built $53 million dorm, Centennial Place.

The assistant area coordinator for Centennial, Amber Bush, called campus police services after she allegedly smelled marijuana coming from a room, according to a campus police report written by officer Ted Quinn on Feb 19.

Police questioned an 18-year-old student about the smell. The student denied smoking in her room, according to the police report. However, she allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana outside and said the smell must have ‘followed her in,’ officer Quinn wrote in his report.

No drugs were found in the room, Quinn wrote. The case was referred to the Office of Student Conduct. Another student was accused of smoking weed in a different dorm a day later. In this case, a smoke detector in Rawls Hall went off, according to a campus police report written by officer Jermale Taylor.

Police searched the room and could not find drugs but claimed they smelled weed, officer Taylor wrote.

The 19-year-old resident, allegedly “smokes marijuana but had only been smoking a cigarette prior to the alarm,” the report said. This case was also referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

This is just the most recent case of students being allegedly caught with drugs or alcohol in dorms.

Earlier this month, four Memphis Tiger football players were caught with alcohol at Centennial Place.

Before the semester started in January, a student was found allegedly intoxicated at the $53 million dorm.

Theft at Centennial Place Michael Rossi, 19, claimed someone took $100 and a karaoke ticket from his wallet, according to a campus police report written by officer Stephen Grisham on Feb. 17.

Rossi said he last had his wallet on the first floor of Centennial Place where he placed the wallet on a towel to use the showers. There are no suspects at this time.
