Tiger Leadership Institute offers free training to students

Students who want to gain career experience and become more involved on the U of M campus can now apply to be part of the Tiger Leadership Institute.

The goal of the program is to enhance the academic experience for students while teaching them how to build personal and professional relationships.

Tammy Louie, a 20-year old finance student from New York, said the program has made her time at the U of M more enjoyable and helped her come out of her shell.

“It was pretty helpful because I was able to meet a few friends,” she said. “I think Tiger Leadership Institute was able to provide a form of direction for me. It helped me with teamwork, finding myself and helped me meet new people.”

The deadline to apply for the program is midnight on Feb. 12.

“Students can expect a stepby- step process on how to get their college involvement off the ground,” said Zach Carr, supervisor at Tiger Leadership Institute.

“It’s really important that we teach them the core skills, such as time management that will be applicable to their college and career success.”

The program lasts throughout the semester. There are three levels of training. Each has a specific purpose and audience it is aimed for.

“I think I can benefit from the program since I’m interested in community development,” said Trevor Galloway, a sophomore social work student. “I could possibly gain better people skills.”

Level one is available to U of M freshmen and focuses on initial participation steps and academic success.

Level two is for sophomore, junior and senior students who want to learn how to become an effective student leader. This level is also open to freshmen who have graduated from level one.

Level three is only offered to level two graduates. Its concentration includes leadership concepts that students will apply in their careers.

Students who apply will be notified if they are accepted into the program by Feb. 15
