Writing and editing for The Daily Helmsman more than 20 years ago was the best practical experience I could have gotten as a young journalist. It is where I got to see my first byline and, more importantly, where I learned about the importance of hard deadlines and working with a group to put out a daily product.
The kickback we got from the administration then, of course, was just a sample of what I'd face later, and it was good training. Those in positions of power are always the same, whether they're a sheriff, mayor, business leader or the president of a college.
