New mathematical position in honor of former professor

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis is accepting applications for a new assistant professorship in honor of Ralph Faudree, who passed away at the beginning of January 2015.

The Faudree Assistant Professorship will be for two years. However, those who hold the position may be given a third year if their teaching and research is sufficient.

Those who apply are preferred to have studied graphic theory and have received their Ph.D. in the last three years.

Anyone who is appointed will help graduate and undergraduate students and will be required to conduct personal research.

Faudree began teaching at the U of M in 1971. While teaching, he also did ample research, writing 250 research papers. He visited numerous universities in Europe. Through his opportunities there, he met Paul Erdös.

They did research together on graphic theory until 1996, when Erdös passed away.

Faudree continued the research, collaborating with researchers in both Hungary and the United States. He cosponsored the U of M’s annual Erdös lecture series.

Faudree was the 2005 recipient of the Euler medal, a prestigious award among mathematicians.
