It is no secret that University of Memphis sophomore guard-forward Adonis Thomas has endured a rough season. Highly touted coming out of Melrose High School, Thomas' first season in the blue and gray was plagued by injuries. Virtually missing his freshman year, he entered this season expected to show what had made him such a highly prized recruit. The problem was the significant amount of time missed affected his development and it showed through the first half of the season, as he struggled to find his shot, shooting under 40 percent and averaging just over 10 points per game.

Statistics show Hispanic students are underrepresented at the University of Memphis; the percentage of Hispanics in the city is 6.5 percent, while they constitute less than three percent of the student body, according to the Office of Institutional Research's 2013 statistics. Their representation lags 30 percent behind African-American students, and 74 percent behind Caucasians.
